Friwen Island is a small and beautiful island located in Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua, Indonesia, known for its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, coral reefs, and rich marine biodiversity. Surrounded by traditional coastal communities and tropical forests, Friwen offers a unique combination of natural beauty, local culture, and community-based tourism.
The island is particularly famous for its Friwen Wall, a spectacular coral reef area that attracts divers and snorkelers from around the world. Beyond tourism, Friwen is also a place where visitors can experience local life, interact with the community, and learn about the importance of protecting marine and coastal ecosystems.
One afternoon, I joined several children from the village to look for clams along the shoreline of Friwen Island, Raja Ampat. With the sea slowly retreating, small pools of water, rocks, sand, and coral flats appeared before us. For the children, this was not a special activity—it was simply part of everyday life.
